[00:00:00] Speaker A: What up? What up? What up? Welcome back to the Bad Podcast, Brad and Duane. I'm in the studio. Brad's not in the studio this time, but we are back, man. Brad, what we talking about today, man?
[00:00:10] Speaker B: I'm in the Uncle Brad studio. I'm in my leg.
We're going to talk about calm, not comfort. We're going to talk about quitting, always being available. And I got a little excerpt out of my book. Quitting is always available. Every decision to keep going builds your identity. Every decision to settle reinforces another version of yourself. Over time, those choices shape your standards in every area of your life. Settling feels like relief in that moment, but long term, it becomes regret because deep down, you know you left something unfinished. Pushing through doesn't always feel heroic, but it builds confidence that can be handed to you because it was earned. You can't always operate at full intensity forever. There are seasons of building, pushing, maintaining, and even recovery. Stepping back at the right time isn't weakness, it's strategy. Burnout often comes from ignoring recovery, not from effort itself.
[00:00:59] Speaker A: I like that. Let's get it.
[00:01:04] Speaker B: Are you ready? Are you ready?
[00:01:21] Speaker A: What? A little, like, what it be like what it do? Welcome back to the Bad Podcast, Brad and Duane. And as I'm saying that, I literally get an alert that says bad Podcast recording today at 10.
[00:01:31] Speaker B: I get that every day. And we never record on Wednesdays.
[00:01:36] Speaker A: Yeah, man. Yeah, man. But super excited to be back in here, man. Like I mentioned, you know, you're good. Look, we're in the open space today, so people will be coming in and out, and I am cool with it. But here with my man Brad, man, Brad, I am.
I'm excited, bro. I like. Fall is my favorite, and I just feel it coming, brother. I'm just. It's throwing that out there, man.
[00:01:57] Speaker B: Yeah, you know, it's. It's actually kind of neat because we're going to talk about cool and calm, and, you know, You know, this is. This is just real and raw, you know, and, you know, this is just for our consumers. You know, we. We do these podcasts religiously, and we don't get to always set up our background or our, you know, our. Our environment. So this is just a prime time for our viewers to watch. And you're going to see people in and out, and no, no worries. But we're gonna. We're gonna stay calm, we're gonna stay cool, we're gonna stay collected. And my favorite time of year is also fall. I got married in September. Didn't you get When. When's your. When's your wedding?
[00:02:32] Speaker A: July. It was July.
We did it when it was hot and the gas prices were high. This is 2008.
[00:02:39] Speaker B: The worst.
[00:02:40] Speaker A: Worse.
[00:02:40] Speaker B: I was fresh out of. Out of high school.
[00:02:42] Speaker A: Yeah, bro.
[00:02:43] Speaker B: Yeah. Yeah.
I. I don't know why I thought that, but I got married in September.
[00:02:48] Speaker A: I do love it. So you got it all. Like, I. You know what? I did see her for the very first time in November. So there you go.
[00:02:57] Speaker B: We. Adrian and I also met in November. Another thing in common.
[00:03:00] Speaker A: D.
There you go.
[00:03:02] Speaker B: Yeah, great. Great time of the year. You know, it's cool. It's, you know, and. But it's also this time of year where a lot of people start to do one of two things. They either start to put their fitness on the back burner or on the forefront. Because you got two styles of people here, two types of people, rather. You got those teachers that are starting to get back in the swing of things with the school year. And, you know, for you guys that are down south, school years already in full swing, you're a month in.
But for us up here in the north, we are just getting the ball rolling. School teachers are just getting back to school. We're starting here in a week and a half right after Labor Day.
And it's. So for teachers, they're starting to reprioritize their health and fitness because they have an opportunity to get back into a structured plan and a routine. But for a lot of people going into the holidays, this is a time where a lot of us, we do unfortunately place our fitness and health on the back burner. And that's what I wanted to talk to today about, is being calm and not comfortable, because calm is being able to face the challenges, the holidays, the mishaps, the setbacks, all those things, and not letting those things control you, where comfort is avoiding the things that can that challenge you. Right? And we. We've always talked that, you know, to find and discover your best, it's about facing discomfort. It's about facing and experiencing a little pain and pushing through those things. And I. I had a conversation with a friend, and then I'm gonna turn the mic over to you because I know I've been chit chatting the whole time. Good man.
[00:04:27] Speaker A: Roll with it. You feeling it?
[00:04:28] Speaker B: Yeah, I've been so. I had a conversation with a buddy of mine the other day, and. And we were talking about storms, right? And you know, when you are. When you imagine or create an image in your mind of a hurricane, you know, and you Walk through that hurricane, essentially, you're gonna. You're gonna face some funny things, you're gonna face some scary things. You're gonna face some pain, discomfort, all those things. But when you get to the eye of the storm, right, you feel a sense of accomplishment because you work so extremely hard to get to that eye of the storm. And that is the prime opportunity for us to stay calm, cool, collected, don't get comfortable, don't take your foot off the gas, because you gotta. If you want to come out of that storm and go into the next storm or no, onto the next journey, you got to be buckled up and ready for the next storm, because you're gonna have to come out the other side of the storm. So calm, not collected. That's what we're talking about today.
What do you guys like?
[00:05:19] Speaker A: I like it. You're good, man. No, you're good. You know, you said a lot of cool things there.
The.
The. The hurricane thing. You know, us eastern, eastern North Carolina folks, we're very familiar with hurricanes. And I remember, you know, like, the. It gets terrible when it's coming through, and then it calms down for a little while, and then it gets terrible again. And it's that. It's that that eye that passes over. I've experienced it quite a few times. But, you know, the.
The crazy thing is, you know, it's a mentality for sure, because we talk about going into the fall and you know, how we look at the. The holidays, how we look at missing, you know, a workout, you know, instead of. Because it's. Oh, man. So much. So instead of like, ignoring it, acknowledging it and being cool, but being okay with it. You know what I mean? Like, instead of just like, totally putting it on the shelf and avoiding it, like, hey, okay, I missed the workout, but it's not the end of the road. I'm gonna make it. I'm gonna be here tomorrow. I'm gonna do okay. I enjoyed this meal. It's not the end of the road. I'm gonna get right back on tomorrow. And it's a. It's a. It's really a huge difference in that mindset that I think is just super important that, you know, people kind of. When they. When they're addressing things like that, which side they stand on.
[00:06:51] Speaker B: Yeah, you know, that's. That's huge in self development and growth and fitness. You know, a lot of people, they'll have that bad meal or they'll have that day off, and they. They find comfort in those things, right?
And it's oh, it's okay to find comfort from time to time, but not constantly seeking out comfort and really developing the ability to remain calm in, in those tough decisions. You know, I, I, I too would rather eat cheese and pepperoni pizza every single day of my life. I too would, would choose the hazy IPA over water every, not every day, but a lot of days. You know, I, I, I too would find comfort in, in those things that make you feel good in the moment. And I, I'll, I'll use myself as an example with running, right?
You know, if you are training for a half marathon or a full marathon and you reach your finish line, you know, a lot of us, we, we face a lot of discomfort and pain through the 26.2 miles, but once you reach that finish line, a lot of us, we, we just grow comfor our foot off the gas. And it's just like with our, with our weight loss, right? You lose 50 pounds, it's so easy to find, you know, comfort in that and say, I, I did mine, I'm going to go on autopilot, I'm going to go on cruise control, and that's that, that leads to regression. But if you can remain calm while you reach that accolade or once you accomplish that thing, you know, whatever it is, right, whatever it is, remain calm and set your next standard, set your next bar or your next goal.
That, that's how you continue this journey. And far too many people, they reach a milestone or a finish line and they're like, I'm good. And then they're, and then they regress back to an old lifestyle or old behavior set and, you know, ultimately leading to frustration, discouragement, and quitting.
[00:08:40] Speaker A: All right, so I'm gonna say get off my toes, Brad, because that's, that's actually how I approached my first bodybuilding show. Um, it was get this accomplishment. Once I made it accomplishment, I was just like, let's go. Bring on the Oreos.
[00:09:01] Speaker B: Reese's Oreos. Double stop.
[00:09:04] Speaker A: Yeah, yeah, yeah. But, you know, that wasn't the right move, man. And so. You good? You good? It's a wide open podcast. Come on in at least. But, but yeah, that wasn't the right move, man. And it, it not only did it set me back, but it also just, it, I felt terrible, you know, and I talk about it all the time, man, how I just kind of, once I reached that goal, it was like a milestone and it was like a nose dive in the opposite direction. And man, that was, that was not a good idea.
[00:09:34] Speaker B: Yeah, well, I think a lot of people. What's that?
[00:09:38] Speaker A: And I said, boss just walked in.
[00:09:40] Speaker B: Oh, hey, you know, it's, you know, it's, it's, it's that forever, forever thing. Like, you know, you experience, you know, what you went through. You got the double stuffed Oreos and those, those, those quick decisions that you feel so good in the moment, but ultimately all of that stuff just leads to a life of regret and a life of remorse. And, you know, I think a lot of us, we, we don't understand the price that, you know, the price that, that, that, that, that temporary high pay, you know, pays in the long, in the long run. And it's just so hard in those moments, you know, and, and it's just. Use us as an example, folks. You know, Dwayne and his bodybuilding, me with my iron man, you know, use us as examples. You know, there are so many decisions that we make on the other side of that accomplishment where we are not thinking long term. We're not thinking 3, 6, 9, week, month, year from now, Brad, or now, Dwayne.
We're thinking about how we feel right now. And, and like I said, I'd rather eat cheese and pepperoni every single day, but I have a goal or something that I want to achieve with my life. That cheese and pepperoni that don't align, that hazy IPA that don't align. So you got to understand that you got to make decisions for the long term in the long haul. And, you know, again, calm yourself before you make that decision. Right? I, I want the Oreos. Calm down. Do you really want the Oreos?
Maybe. But not three, six, nine, year from now that Dwayne don't want those Oreos or the Reese.
[00:11:13] Speaker A: I think I will, Brad. I ain't gonna lie.
[00:11:16] Speaker B: I'm taking a step back over here. I'm honestly like, wait a minute.
[00:11:23] Speaker A: Right, right. Yeah. No, we need an endorsement. Somebody reach out to Nabisco.
Nah, man. But, you know, it's, it's just interesting, man, just the, the way that, you know, we, we've experienced that and even our clients, you know, when we, when we used to, you know, go hard with, on the weight loss side, you know, they've experienced, you know, I hit my goal, you know, and, you know, I think the, the thing that, that I want people to take away from this is, you know, like you mentioned, like, become. Take, Take a step back. I even made a real about, you know, you', hungry. You know, like a lot of guys, I mean, it's everybody. And I said that in my real, like, you use. Food is comfort. You use it. You know, there's a dopamine hit there. There's a comfort there. And, you know, and we're like, Brad mentioned pizza 10 times in this episode. And Oreos. You know, for me, you know, it's not like we're blind to that kind of thing. But sometimes, you know, you may be thirsty and you think you're hungry. Sometimes you need to drink a big gulp of water. Sometimes you need to take a walk. Sometimes you just need to take a second. It was like, let me think about this thing before you actually go and grab anything, whatever that thing is, man. So I think that just understanding the impulsive side and staying cool, staying calm, and not panicking, man, is super important, man. So, Brad, what you got on the way out of here, brother?
[00:12:59] Speaker B: Hey, I'll end with this. Comfort protects the present. Discipline protects the future. Calm gives you the ability to choose between them.
[00:13:06] Speaker A: That boy bad. Y' all out of here.
