[00:00:03] Speaker A: Are you ready? Are you ready? [00:00:18] Speaker B: What up, what up? What up? Welcome back to the Bad podcast. Brad and Dwayne in here with my brother Brad, also with another brother. We're gonna get to him in a minute. Brad, what we talking about today, brother? [00:00:28] Speaker C: Hey, we're gonna talk about identity. Be a part of part of your identity, not apart from it. Embrace what shapes you, and you'll never lose yourself, man. We got a really special guest today. Will, introduce yourself. [00:00:38] Speaker A: So my name is Will Carter. I'm originally from England, and I've lived here now for 10 years. I'm the owner of no Limits Fitness, as well as a E2M premium coach. I am a professional natural bodybuilder. 33 years old, and that's 33. [00:00:54] Speaker B: D the young man. 33. [00:00:56] Speaker A: I'm old. You know how it is, though, when you're like 18, you're like, man, 30 is right. And then you hit 30 and you're like, I'm in the prime. Like, I am. I am. I am young and I'm ready. [00:01:10] Speaker B: And wait till you hear 40, man. [00:01:12] Speaker A: Honestly, I'm excited for it. Like, I. True. I tell everyone I'm excited for it because I feel like you have the wisdom, the knowledge, like, you. You've got yourself far enough in life that you're comfortable. Ish. Hopefully. And I feel like you don't care about other people's opinions even more. [00:01:28] Speaker B: Some people do, just so you know. But no, before we got started, actually before we brought it on, you know, me and Brad was talking about, you know, your age and what you've done so far. And you know, how we know that story is going to motivate some people. So let's jump into it, man. Just tell us the background of Will Carter outside of the pretty face and the. The accent. The accent, because, you know, they be lighting you up. Group, you know, they're like. And listen to Will Carter, you know, read the. The newspaper, you know, so let's give us a little background. [00:02:00] Speaker A: I will say it's a cheat code. It's like, just be an English man and come to America and doors will open, right? It's like, yeah, where to start, man? Honestly, it's. It's one of those things in life, I think, that, you know, you can't connect the dots looking forward, but you can always connect them looking back. And every single event has led you to this point, right? And you don't. You don't recognize it in the small moments, but it really is a chain of events that have led me to this point and, and led me to my faith actually, because I was, I was not in my faith for 31 years of my life. Didn't rejected God completely. But now I look back, I can connect those dots at how God was always like working for me and orchestrating for me, even when it didn't feel like it or bad things were happening. Right. So how I got to America, let's start there. So I went to work on cruise ships when I was 20. I wasn't liking the route that my life was going down. A lot of partying, no real direction. I knew I was capable of more, but I wasn't going in that direction. And, and you know, drink and recreational drugs and stuff like that. And, and I knew that wasn't where I wanted my life to go. So I looked up personal training jobs abroad. The cruise ship was the first thing that came up on Google and I was like, well, personal training, that didn't. [00:03:20] Speaker B: Come up for me when I searched. [00:03:22] Speaker A: I. That sounds epic. I've never been on a cruise ship in my life. Never even seen one. Let's go for it. So I, so I just, I literally applied. I had an interview in London like a couple of weeks later. And the next day they said, you've got the job. You're going to be coming to London for three weeks of intensive training in like a couple weeks. So I pretty much really quickly hit said my goodbyes to everyone. I was like, I'm going, yeah. And then next thing I know. [00:03:50] Speaker B: What age, what age were you? [00:03:51] Speaker A: I was 20. [00:03:52] Speaker C: Wow. [00:03:52] Speaker A: So, so next thing I, and this is a funny thing, in England you can drink at 18. [00:03:56] Speaker B: Yeah. Yeah. [00:03:57] Speaker A: So this, this is also probably what God was helping me with as well. [00:03:59] Speaker B: Right. [00:04:00] Speaker A: So I joined, I joined the cruise ship and they give you this, this, if you're under 21, you get this yellow card. So I'm walking around with my yellow C pass card so I can't buy a drink. Right. So I'm like, you know, I'd have guys buy me a whiskey and pour it in a Coke away. Yeah. So I joined the cruise ship in Miami when I was 20 and I actually started with Carnival. I was on an agency that could, that could put you on any cruise ship around the world. So I started with Carnival. After a month I got transferred to a Royal Caribbean ship because the guy from there got fired. And then I was there for a month and then they transferred me to another ship because another guy got fired. And I, I was this close to quitting. I was like I didn't sign up for this. I didn't sign up to keep being moved around. I meet people, I get to another ship, and then I get moved again. [00:04:49] Speaker B: So it was like kind of like NFL. You didn't get to choose. They told you. [00:04:52] Speaker A: Listen, man, it was my day off in Cozumel and my phone rings. It's my manager. Well, you got 30 minutes. Pack your bags. You're going to the ship next door. [00:05:03] Speaker B: Wow. Wow. [00:05:04] Speaker A: She's like, you can run up to the, the gym and say goodbye to everyone, but you got to be gone. So, I mean, I was like, fast, all right, jump in the shower, pack all my stuff. You got nine months worth of stuff in the suitcase. [00:05:15] Speaker B: Right. [00:05:15] Speaker A: I was onto the other ship. Yeah. So. But I. It made me really close to quitting. And there was actually a book called Jack. It's Jack Canfield, the Success Principles. Someone gave me that book and said, just read this. And it really transformed my perspective on everything and my attitude towards the whole thing. I said, you know what? I don't quit. Just see it through. See the nine months through. Something good is going to come from this. And then that's where I met my now wife. [00:05:40] Speaker B: Wow. [00:05:40] Speaker A: So there's a dance cast, and they traded out for a new dance cast. And I'm like, you know, we got, we got a new dance cast. Let's see, let's see what these ladies are looking like. And, and the minute I saw my wife, I was like, there's something about her. I gotta get to know her and I gotta meet her. And I'd like to say that, you know, I was all macho and went over there and said, hey, you know, but I was like, I was very shy at the time, right? And eventually we got introduced and, you know, long story short, I'm over here in America now in Charlotte and chatting to you guys. [00:06:14] Speaker B: Fast forward, right? Yeah. [00:06:15] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:06:16] Speaker C: Well, they say everything happens for a reason. And I'm fascinated by this story because, you know, we're going to talk a little bit about. About identity today and what I know and what you know, you know, deep down under, deep beneath. And what maybe the folks from, from your hometown know of Will Carter are completely different. So talk about, talk about the transformation from the days of, you know, some abuse with drugs and alcohol and now where you're at today, like, we all still have vices, right? Like, I, you know, I have to do some sort of cardio every single day. We all have a vice. And, you know, what's, what's something that Keeps you in the game, disciplined, you know, as far as that goes. [00:06:54] Speaker A: Yeah. So, I mean, it was really how I got into bodybuilding, right, Is I found the gym, and that became my obsession. It was. I've always had a lot of energy. Like, it. I. I feel it, like, and I have to channel that energy into something. Otherwise, I get extremely frustrated. I'm very antsy. Like, I've got to be going. And then when I found the gym, I would go seven days a week. I would go twice a day because it made me feel confident, it made me feel good. It was a release of that, the energy and the frustration that I was feeling at the time. So that's really what, like. Yeah, led me into bodybuilding and kind of got me away from that lifestyle. But, like, you say, like, I. I still like a drink, you know, And English culture is very much built around drinking. What I've noticed in America is that the culture is very much built around food. So you have your NFL games on Sunday, and it's wings, it's pizza. It's like, now in England, it would all be around beer and alcohol. It's like, even people that go over on their lunch break from work, they'll go and have a couple beers in the pub. [00:07:52] Speaker B: Oh, wow. [00:07:53] Speaker A: You know, and then go back to work. [00:07:54] Speaker B: I had a guy do that one time at my job. They said, don't come back. Yeah, this is a. This is another boss. Another boss. But, yeah, we went to a restaurant and we didn't know he was in there, and one of the guys ordered a beer, and he stopped by the table. Hey, you don't come back. [00:08:14] Speaker A: That was an expensive beer. [00:08:16] Speaker B: Yeah, man. Yeah. [00:08:17] Speaker A: But it's this. It's definitely my thing. When I prep for bodybuilding shows, I often tell people it. The food doesn't really bother me. I like food, but I can go long periods of time eating just the same thing. Right now. I like a glass of red wine. I like a whiskey. And I like the social side of it. Right. And. And that's probably the biggest struggle for me in prep, is not being able to have any of that. And I just. I. I do find myself. I have to be careful because I get a couple of beers in me or something, I get a little buzz, and I start to get a feel of it, and I'm like, oh, this is, you know, like, alcohol's that thing that, in moderation, can be great. [00:08:52] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:08:53] Speaker A: It can enhance the mood, it can enhance the atmosphere, but when taken too far, it gets dangerous. Right? [00:08:58] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:08:59] Speaker A: And the one thing I've realized, you know, having three kids and a business is one. One night can ruin everything, right? And it's. That's where alcohol is so dangerous, because socially, it's such an acceptable drug. It's probably the one drug that socially, it's like, oh, have a drink. [00:09:15] Speaker B: Right. [00:09:16] Speaker A: But it can very quickly lead to, you know, some really bad decisions and some things in your life that you. [00:09:22] Speaker B: You. [00:09:22] Speaker A: A path you don't want to go down. So that kind of. I keep that in check, I think. I think bodybuilding keeps me on the straight and narrow because there's no benefit to drinking in bodybuilding. [00:09:31] Speaker B: Right. [00:09:32] Speaker A: And then also, just as a business owner, I. I don't want to ruin my business, my reputation, just because of that, you know? [00:09:40] Speaker C: Yeah, I. I think it comes down to standards, Dwayne. Yeah, 100 talk about standards all the time. And, you know, everybody sets an expectation for themselves. And unfortunately, I think a lot of. A lot of people in society, they don't really, you know, have that high standard for themselves. It's just easier to settle. And you're holding yourself to that standard because you're a business owner, you're a father, you're a husband, you're all the things, and you have to be disciplined in those moments where you could go and have that third glass of wine, that third glass of bourbon. And we were talking before the podcast, you know, with. With genetics and DNA, and that's. That's one of the big biggest excuses, like, oh, it's in my DNA. Alcoholism runs in my DNA. Obesity runs in my DNA. And, you know, I was just reading the statistic that up to 30% of your DNA or up to 30% of your genetics plays a role on who you become. It's. It's your behaviors, it's your routines, it's your, you know, it's your habits. And your prime example. You come from a drinking society, yet you're able to control that. I don't know what your family. I don't know what your history is about, but in my family, not obesity. Alcoholism runs in my family. And I experimented when I was in college and did all the things and all that, but again, 30%, so you have a 70% opportunity to say, that's not going to be my identity. You have choices to make, and I think you're leading that path for. For those to follow. I mean, you're a gym owner, so you have to, you know, you have to be the standard for all these folks that are coming into your facility. [00:11:06] Speaker A: Yeah, I think you hit the nail on the head. We all have choices, right, Every single day. And it's the easy choices to do what's comfortable and makes you feel good and what your family's always done and what society wants you to do. But on the other hand of that, it's all negative, right? Nothing grows there. And then you have the hard decisions every day that you don't necessarily want to make. But on the flip side of that is the amazing person that you can become, the impact you can have, the lives that you can inspire. And that's the biggest thing for me, right, is it's. It's not about me. It's about inspiring other people to realize, like, they're not limited by their genetics. Because I was always the smallest kid in school, height wise, size wise. I was in, like, the bottom three, five smallest people. So, you know, now I'm a professional natural bodybuilder. Right? And it's. But it's taken 15 years of work to get to that point. So you can stand back and you can blame your genetics all you want, but nothing's going to change if you do that. What you have to do with your genetics is take it as far as you can. We can't be Michael Phelps. No, Right. The guy was built in a lab. If you're going to take a swim up, You. [00:12:20] Speaker B: You. [00:12:20] Speaker A: Michael Phelps is exactly who you would design. Usain Bolt. You. [00:12:24] Speaker B: You. [00:12:24] Speaker A: You're not going to be LeBron James. Right. You would already know if you are, but that doesn't mean you don't work. [00:12:29] Speaker B: Right? [00:12:30] Speaker A: Oh, I can't be LeBron, so I'm not going to bother playing basketball. That doesn't make sense. No, Right. It's like on your side of. Of running, biking. All right, well, sorry, Brad. You're not going to be Lance Armstrong, so just give up. Yeah, right. Where's the. You wouldn't do that. You'd never make that decision. But when it comes down to our bodies and obesity and alcoholism, we say, well, I'm just. This is who I am. No, it isn't. The choices you make every day are who you are. [00:12:55] Speaker C: Yeah. And a lot of people just accept that. Like, they're just like, yeah, I'm gonna lay down and I'm gonna stay here. I'm gonna. I'm gonna get beat up by society. I'm gonna get beat up by the universe and just gonna take it. And, you know, you have to. You have to reach that crossroad where you just like, no. Yeah, I'm Gonna stand up for myself. I'm gonna stand up and. And then it comes down to legacy. Like, for me, this bike ride that I'm doing in May, like, it's all about my legacy. Like, I'm not the most talented bike rider in the world, but I want to go down and have my kids someday speak to dad. Like, my dad wasn't a great bike rider, but, man, did he try. You know, he gave it his all. And I think that's the same story for all three of us. Like, we're not the most talented, but there's not going to be a day that comes. [00:13:34] Speaker B: Speak for yourself. [00:13:36] Speaker A: We're just trying to find out what our talent is. [00:13:38] Speaker B: That's it. That's it. That's it. [00:13:40] Speaker A: He's a great dancer. I've seen his moves. [00:13:42] Speaker B: Hey, man, listen. Multiple talents, man. But no, so that, you know, speaking of legacy, will, you know, being an entrepreneur, being a business owner, you know, what, what's kind of the trajectory for you? Like, what's, what are your, what's your vision for your family and for your legacy and your business? What do you think about when it comes to those things? [00:14:03] Speaker A: I know, I think, I think it's just impact. Like, you know, it's, I can't put a number on it. There's no, I, I, I'm not, like, monetarily driven. Like, don't get me wrong, I think that we should, we should see the benefits of our work, and there should be rewards for the work, and often that is monetary, right? And you want nice things for your family. But for me, it's about impact. For me, it's about how many lives can we impact, how many people can we encourage, how many can we motivate? Because people don't tell us every day. I'm sure you get this. I'm sure you get this. People don't come up to you every single day and go, you inspire me so much. But there'll be an event that happens, and, and people you don't even realize are paying attention and they're watching and they're inspired, and that's the stuff that makes me feel good, you know? And I think it's like, if I was only motivated to wake up every day, for me, I don't know how much motivation I would have. When I know my kids are looking up to me, when I know I got my wife, when I know that I've got employees, when I know that I've got a community that to some degree are reliant upon me. Waking up every day with the same passion, the same fire and the same enthusiasm that gets me going. So, you know, I, I, it sounds cheesy, it sounds cliche, but I believe the sky's the limit. You know, I don't want to put any kind of limit on what we can do because I think just every couple of years, doors open, you're in new situations. Like, I never thought I'd be sat here as an E2M coach with you guys. So I met Jeff when he did my bodybuilding show eight years ago, and we just, we've, we've stayed in touch ever since. And then the next thing, he's a partner in my gym and I'm a part of this. Was a coach. And it's, you just don't know. You can never say, very true. Five years from now where you might be. But I do believe if we continue to do what we're doing and work like we are, then just great things are going to happen for everyone. That's, that's just my belief, you know, I like it. [00:15:53] Speaker C: And I, I, I mean, you can boil it down to any success, success story that you've ever heard. Like, everybody has to go through the trials and tribulations. Like anybody that's made it was once down on their knees, once down on the ground, like, getting beat up by the world. And like you said, like, you never know where you're going to be in three, four, five years. But, man, if you're not trying, what are you doing? Like, you're not trying to improve? What, what, what's the alternative to not trying and not trying to improve? You know, you're, we just talked about this over here where, you know, you took second place, right, this, this past show, fifth. You know, same difference, kind of, but. [00:16:28] Speaker A: I'm still really happy with that. It's like the Cattle Row competition. [00:16:30] Speaker C: Absolutely. But, but we were talking over there, what's next? Like, you are already a champion, but like, you're, you're trying to improve just that much more and get back on the stage and get that gold. [00:16:41] Speaker A: I, I don't, I think especially as men, we need a mission. There's got to be a mission, right? Like the, the worst, the worst thing for a man is to have no purpose and no mission. And that's where the alcoholism comes in, right? That's where the drugs come in, because you're searching for something that isn't there. But when we wake up every day with a mission and a purpose, there's, it keeps you disciplined, it keeps Your structure, it keeps you honest and doing the right things over and over again. So, yeah, I think a mission is, is, it's fundamental. [00:17:14] Speaker C: It's, it's, you know, it's that old saying, man, if it feels good right now, it leaves you empty. But you know, if you, if you're doing something that's really hard, you know, it's, it's really hard to see the long game and things. But you, if you had that vision. Dwayne and I talk about vision all the time. If you can maintain that vision of whatever you want in your life. And I, I've talked about it with him. You know, I'm doing a 1200 mile bike ride. I can already see the folks at the finish line. I, I have that vision so deeply ingrained in me where like when I get up in the morning, like the last thing I want to do is ride 100 miles, 120 miles. Like that's the last thing I want to do. But then I remember, okay, my kids are going to be at that finish line, my wife's going to be at that finish line. I'm going to have some friends and other family are going to be at that finish line. And if you can really burn that image into your mind, you know, it keeps you kind of disciplined and straight, narrow. [00:17:57] Speaker A: I think it's, there's, that, that, that picture right, of, it's, I think it's a basketball player where they're shooting a three pointer with a whole crowd and it's. Champions aren't made here, champions are made here. And it's an empty stadium, just them, by themselves, sweat equity, doing the work. And I think everybody wants the end. [00:18:17] Speaker B: Oh, yeah. [00:18:18] Speaker A: But they don't want the process. And what people don't realize is, is the process is what makes you like, like every single person that's won at something, is successful in life, has accomplished a hard endeavor. It's not about the end endeavor, it's about who they're becoming through the process. [00:18:34] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:18:35] Speaker A: You know, it's like when people win the lottery and then they just blow it all. They haven't earned it, they haven't done any work, they haven't changed as a person. They've just been handed everything. And it builds no character, builds no discipline. And, and I think, yeah, like Jocko Willink says, discipline equals freedom. Right. It's, it's what true freedom is, is discipline. [00:18:55] Speaker B: Yeah. Yeah. I think if I win though, I would be disciplined with it. [00:19:00] Speaker A: What's the first thing you're buying? What's the person you're buying if you win the lottery. [00:19:03] Speaker B: Oh, no, man, I'm getting a lawyer first, man. I'm getting a lawyer. Getting accountant. [00:19:08] Speaker A: I think I do good check with a mask on, right? No one's going to know, but they'll be signed. [00:19:12] Speaker B: Of course, I still show up here and everything, man. Everything. I'd be a silent partner of Easy One Premium. But no, man, that's, that's really cool, man. You know, one of my favorite commercials is the, the Michael Jordan commercial where it says, you know, maybe I made it look too easy. You know, and he's going through, he's like, maybe, you know, the six championships look too easy. Maybe the defensive player of the year looked too easy. And you just think, you just wake up and do it. And he talk about like, you don't see all the shots. You don't see all the, the weight training and all that, man. That's one of my favorite commercials, man, because like you mentioned, Will, a lot of people don't see that side and then all they aspire to is the ending, you know, and that, that in itself, frustration. If you're, if you don't know about the work or if you, you know, not ready for the work, you're gonna, you're gonna tap out, man, you know. So what would be your advice, man, to somebody that, you know, sees an entrepreneur, see, sees a, a natural bodybuilder, you know, father. What would be your advice to that, you know, 20, 19 year old might be watching this podcast, man, you know, especially because, you know, there's a lot of steps to get here. What would be your advice to that? [00:20:17] Speaker A: It's perfect timing this on my Instagram story last night just had a random thought and it was like, it's all about persistence and success in life is basically the ability to show up every single day with the same level of enthusiasm, no matter what you could have had. One thing I noticed with entrepreneurs is because I have a few clients that they've been very successful entrepreneurs and they'll tell me, like, I'm dealing with a level of stress every day that nobody would understand. And they don't know. Yeah, they don't. Because they don't. They're not going to go and share it because what's anyone going to say? They're not going to feel sympathy. No, because they're going to say, well, you're lonely, you can't have whatever because money must take away stress. [00:20:57] Speaker B: Right, right, right. [00:20:59] Speaker A: But it truly is just the ability to show up every single day with the same level of enthusiasm. And that whether you're going through hard times, whether you're going through good times. And everyone says, you know, losses will shape you more than wins, because when you win, you don't really learn anything. But every time you lose, you do. So understand that your failures. And you're gonna fail. You're gonna fail more than you're gonna succeed. But this is the ability, after those failures, to just get back up and say, we're going again, and we're going again. And you can't beat the guy that doesn't quit. [00:21:29] Speaker B: That's right. [00:21:30] Speaker A: You know, it's like, I remember playing soccer, and it was like, I'd play center midfield growing up. It's actually football, but I'll call it soccer. And you'd have that guy. You'd have that guy that wouldn't leave you alone. Like, I mean, they're following you all around the pitch, and you're like, dude, give it a rest. Like, like, go, go, mark someone else. And it was annoying, but it's like, I had so much respect for him because they may not be the most gifted player, but they just wouldn't let you breathe for a minute. And I. And I think that's just key in life is, like, whatever you're going through, just keep showing up. And your 100 looks different on every single day. Right. It may not be your best. And you know this, guys, as you work out, not every bike ride is the best bike ride you've ever had. Most of them probably suck. So if you take. If you take 10 workouts, you might have two exceptional workouts. You're gonna have four or five good workouts, and then you're gonna have two or three that suck. But guess what? They all count. [00:22:29] Speaker B: Yep. [00:22:29] Speaker A: They're all stacking bricks. So I think that's one of my favorite sayings is brick by brick. It's. It's one day at a time. And just check your boxes. [00:22:38] Speaker B: Yeah. From the. The grandson of a brick mason. All bricks look different. [00:22:45] Speaker A: But they don't count. [00:22:46] Speaker B: They all count. They all build a house, but they all look different. That is. I. I know that for sure. Yes. [00:22:51] Speaker C: I think that's fire, man. I. I got nothing to follow. [00:22:54] Speaker B: I love it. I love it. All right, man, so we'll. We'll. As we close out this airs on a Monday, somebody from. From England might be watching, man. You got it. Yeah. You got. You got a show. You got a show coming up over there. Tell us what you got going on. And also, where they can find you, and then we'll close it out. [00:23:11] Speaker A: Awesome. Yeah. So we. I'm a promoter in the ocb, so I have a show here in Charlotte and this in two weeks. October. Well, yeah, just under three weeks. October 18th, we're having the first ever OCB European show, taking it back to England. And I'm actually really fascinated because all of our staff is coming from America. [00:23:29] Speaker B: Oh, nice. [00:23:30] Speaker A: So I'm very curious to see the response that they get. Yeah, Brits. [00:23:33] Speaker C: Yeah. [00:23:34] Speaker A: You know, it's going to be interesting. But yeah, we're really excited about that, to be taking it back to the UK and continue to grow that over the years and really build a reputation with the OCB over there. But, yeah, you can find me on Instagram at Will Carter. NLF. Facebook's just Will Carter. I do have a YouTube channel, and you got, like, 350 subscribers or so. [00:23:55] Speaker B: Hey, make sure you subscribe to this channel. [00:23:58] Speaker A: We're starting to build that up, and I'm being consistent. Consistent with that. [00:24:00] Speaker B: What's in the YouTube channel called. Or name whatever. [00:24:04] Speaker A: I think it. See, that's why. [00:24:05] Speaker B: See, that's why I don't have. [00:24:08] Speaker A: I don't know. I guess there's probably a lot of Will Carter's out there, right? So I. I don't know. I'll look it up and I'll let you guys know. [00:24:14] Speaker B: Okay. We'll put it in the show notes. Yeah, in the show. We'll put it in the show notes. Yeah. [00:24:18] Speaker A: I appreciate you guys having me on. This was awesome. [00:24:20] Speaker B: Yeah. Good stuff. All right, Brad, end it, brother. [00:24:22] Speaker C: Hey, I just want to know, if you had one superpower, would it. [00:24:25] Speaker B: What would it be? Oh, man. Oof. [00:24:28] Speaker A: I think it would have to be to fly. I think flying would be super cool. Yeah. [00:24:38] Speaker C: Hey, that's it, baby.
