Episode Transcript
[00:00:00] Speaker A: What up, what up, what up? Welcome back to the bad podcast. Brad and Dwayne. Bradley, my brother. I can't touch you this time like last week, but we still here. We're still bringing the podcast, man. Brad, what you got for the folks?
[00:00:14] Speaker B: All right, so I'm going deep into the new book prep rep forever.
You can't rely on emotion to initiate action. Feelings are unreliable. Motivation comes and goes. What you need is a trigger to bypass emotion completely. That's where I established the 30 minute rule. The idea was simple. Remove the barrier to entry. Most people fail because they make starting feel too overwhelming. We think about running a marathon and immediately focus on all 26.2 miles. Instead of just putting on our shoes and taking the first step, we look at the entire mountain instead of the next few steps in front of us. Even though even the most talented people in the world can become paralyzed when the goal feels too big, the answer is to shrink the threshold so small that it becomes harder to avoid than to begin. If you want to rebuild your health, commit to 10 minutes. If you want to rebuild your business, commit to one action. If you want to repair a relationship, commit to one honest conversation. Starting is not about intensity. It's about accessibility.
[00:01:17] Speaker A: Let's get it.
Are you ready?
[00:01:23] Speaker B: Are you ready?
[00:01:38] Speaker A: What it look like, what it be like, what it do? Back in here, another bad podcast which stands for Brad and Dwayne. And this episode is brought to you by Motivate Duo Boot Camp. Right now on the premium app, you can sign up for the Motivate Duo boot camp. It is the old school style, kick your butt, OG legacy type of circuits. Got the original coaches. So if you're not in each One Premium, sign up right now. Motivate Duo is taking off.

Just like that, baby. So super excited about that. Super pumped about that. So make sure you spread the word.
And I want to make sure that I just, I put that out there, man, because a lot of people don't know Brad. We have a lot of great stuff going on and people just don't know. And actually, while I'm saying that we have now opened up the discount to college students. You know, we got the teachers discount, we got the police officer discount, we got the fireman, we got the military. Now, if you're in college, if you got a college student that, you know, they don't want to put on that freshman 15, you know what I'm saying? I think I put on a freshman 25. Brad ain't gonna hold you. But you can prevent that by getting them the best gift in the world, E2 and Premium. It'll only 20amonth for college students. There's a verification in the checkout form, so do that. And while you add it, put my code down. Dwayne.
No. What is it, Dwayne? 15.
They get another 15 off whatever, whoever you sign up, man. So. All right, I'm done yapping, brag.
[00:03:38] Speaker B: I. I want to go like 17 different directions right now. And you know, so this is actually perfect because I want to go 17 different directions. And I had mentioned in my book there that little piece that I just read, like sometimes we overwhelm ourselves and it leads to inaction. Right? Well, this is perfect. I don't even know what I want to talk about. So I'm just going to hone in on one thing. And the thing that I want to hone in on first is memory lane. I just took a trip down memory lane watching our introduction there and seeing some of the great memories that we have created over the last half a decade.
I've done an iron man. You've been on the stage stage. We've written books, we've. We've done just so much good and, and empowered so many people, motivated, encourage, inspired so many hundreds of thousands of people. And every time I get to watch our intro, I'm reminded that, you know, sometimes this, this work gets stale, it gets stagnant, it gets, it gets mundane and boring.
Yet, you know, we're still here, grinding, still doing the podcast. We took a little bit of a hiatus during the, during the 10 month training of, of the bike ride. But we're back and, but took a, took a trip down memory lane there. And the one thing that you had mentioned after the memory lane trip that I just taken in that intro was we're going old, we're going old school with this new motivate duo program.
And I've had the great opportunity to do already four of those workouts and record some workouts. And it just brought me back to that feeling of being in my old basement with the sweatsuit. I mean, I'm getting goosebumps just thinking about 20, 20, 20, 21, because a lot of people were in dark places, and we were sort of that light, you know, you were. I mean, you were on the. You were on the front lines, man. Like, we were in a dark period in. In. In. In the world, and we were. We were that light for a lot of people. So really, like. Like Dwayne said, we're, like, really excited about bringing this Motivate Duo program back, and I. I get to play a larger role than I have been in the app, so. Very excited about that. Very, very blessed to be in that app.
[00:05:42] Speaker A: Yeah, man. Y' all spoke, and we listened. People were saying, where's Brad?
He got us to sign up. We don't see him. We was like, you know what? That's our bad.
Bradley is in New York, but we're gonna get him down more, man. And that. That's to everybody's benefit, not only for you guys in Premium, but even for the app, for the podcast, man. Let us know how much you enjoyed us being together, man. Maybe y' all could. Maybe y' all can help us sponsor something, and we can fly Brad in every week, you know what I'm saying? Like, if we get the right kind of money, Brad, we can. We can fly you in, you know what I'm saying? Or fly me. Whatever we need to do, man.
[00:06:16] Speaker B: So.
[00:06:17] Speaker A: But no, we. We. That was super dope, and I hope you guys enjoyed. If you didn't check the episode out, go back to the previous episode. Me and Brad were in the studio together, and, you know, it's just different when you're together, man. But to go to. To kind of piggyback off of the nostalgia, you know, a lot of people chase nostalgia, Brad, and it's for good reason. It's good memories.
You know, everybody remembers their first round, Brad. Like, everybody remember first round, bro. And it's almost like a drug. You always trying to go back and get that feeling, man. Like, you know, even with the meal plan, I. I talk to people all the time, man. If I could just stick to the meal plan, like, I did the first round, like, if I could get a first round experience, like, everybody chase that, man. But, you know, that. That's not always. I mean, it's the reality, man. Your body adjusts, your life adjusts. You know, there's no longer a pandemic. You know, I. I tell people, like, I did the program during the pandemic, which was the perfect setting because there were no cookouts, there were no birthday parties.
That was, you Know, it was. Nobody was doing nothing. All I had to eat was chicken, vegetables, and fruit. And that's because I had that either delivered or I went and I wiped it down with Clorox, you know what I'm saying? Like, it was. It was the perfect storm, man, to. To like, really lock in.
And, you know, I think it all ties together, Brad, because, you know, you're chasing that feeling you. You. You. You're trying to get. And that. And that actually, you know, going down memory, it all released an emotional connection, man. And.
And. And when you start motivate duo, you're gonna feel that. That emotional connection. You're gonna feel that like, oh, this reminds me of. You might even break out the old Walmart sweatsuit on, you know what I'm saying? You might slide around on them joints like I was.
Week four is coming of that program.
What's gonna happen when that. When that feel good goes away, when that joy slows down, you know what I'm saying? Because we talk about that all the time, man. So I. I know I went all over the place, but that. I mean, it's part of it, bro. Like, it's good to feel the feeling. But week four is coming.
[00:08:38] Speaker B: Yeah. Yeah. And. And we talk about week four, week five all the time. And that's usually where the stagnants kind of settles in.
And I think winners persevere through the stagnant, you know, the boring, the mundane. We just talked about it. I think that's where winners really thrive. And I mentioned off screen that I want to talk about building bridges. So when we moved into our home three years ago, rolling up on four years. Wild.
[00:09:05] Speaker A: Wow.
[00:09:06] Speaker B: Yeah, man. Holy smokes.
We saw this bridge, this old bridge out front of our house, and I was like, the. That is so weird. What a. What a weird thing to be just out front. But it, like, it covered a stream. Like, it was a nice little addition, I guess, to the front yard.
And a couple of weeks ago, Beckett went over it with his four wheeler, and he's like, dad, some of this bridge is like. It's starting to crumble. It's starting to get a little weak. And so I went out and investigated it, and sure enough, there was, like, three or four boards that have some soft spots. And, you know, a lot of times we look at a bridge from afar, and we're like, oh, man, that thing's sturdy. It's. It's a solid structure.
But one or two, you know, unsteady boards or crumbling boards that are falling apart could absolutely Just let. Allow that bridge to fall. So I, I took some initiative. I was very intentional. I went out there, removed every single board. What a day that was. And then I got some lumber and I started to build the bridge. And of course, Beckett, like, he. He started to help, and then he's five, so he quickly was not helping. And, you know, so a couple of days went by. A couple more days, A couple more days. I finally finished the bridge and it's. It's finished now. I just got to cut up some boards and like, it is good to go, but they're riding their four wheelers over it. But the funny thing about this was he. He stepped out there, right? And after like six, seven, eight days, and he's like, dad, wow. The bridge was done. That was fast. That was easy is what he said. He goes, that was easy. And, and it's just so fascinating to me because this is. This is how fitness goes. This is how business grows, right? It's, it's like being from the outside looking in, it's like, wow, that looks really easy, right? And you see these massive transformations, but you had to fight through that week. Four. You had to. So this is how it went. So, like, I. I didn't measure up front how many boards I needed. So I lay down all the boards, I get them cut, I screw them all in all the things I'm short, I'm like, you got to be kidding me. So I go back to the store, I buy some more two by sixes. I put them down, right?
And this is a perfect opportunity to. To. To learn about roadblocks and, and failure. I had failed to measure the first time. I had failed to measure the second time. I fell short again. Better believe that I learned from the first two mistakes I measured, and now I had the exact amount of boards for the rest of the bridge. The bridge is finished. Beckett's like, wow, that, that was so easy. But guys, like, from the outside looking in it, it perhaps did look easy because one day the bridge was. Was dilapidated and the next day it was built. One day you're going to look at somebody and they maybe have spiraled out of control, and the next day they have transformed. It didn't happen in the next day. It happened through, you know, meticulous details of, hey, I need to measure my food and I need to know the macros. Hey, I stopped drinking soda. Hey, I stopped going out on Friday nights. Hey, I stopped cutting corners and, and I stopped making excuses and went out there and make. Made it happen and just because it looks easy from afar. You don't know how many early mornings it took. You don't know how many late nights it took. You don't know the details that went into that transformation.
[00:12:12] Speaker A: That's right, man. That's on so many levels, bro.
Because people look at a 30 second, 60 second reel and just assume that, you know, you, you did that overnight. It's like, no, you gotta go see all 127, 32nd 62nd reels. I mean, doing the same move over and over and over the same weight and that's, that's where it happened. But you know, it's so funny, like, especially with kids, man, because they, I learned because. Okay, let me back up.
As adults, we feel like time moves fast, right? We, we like, man, like we just talked about it like four years ago. You know, you was in the house and when you was a kid, it felt like time was slow. You thought like summers took, you know, seemed like a whole year for a summer to pass.
But I felt, I found out the reason why the. There is a part of your brain that lights up when something significant happens. And so when a kid, to a kid, a lot of things are significant. And so it just kind of slows down with adults because we kind of dull that sense. We only light up when you buy the house. When you think about it four years later, it's like nothing lit up in that time frame, man. And so that, when I learned that, man, that put me in perspective of, you know, I have to celebrate the small wins. And that connects to what we just talked about.
Because a lot of people, some people are looking at the finished product, but a lot of our listeners are the finished product or they're in the midst of getting to what they, what their goal is, the big goal is, and they've forgotten to, to celebrate the small wins leading up to. Because a lot of our listeners did it that first time. We talked about it, had great results and you know, had to, you know, kind of double back. And now they're in the process now, Brad, and they think they did eight weeks easy. They forgot that there was week one, week two, week three, week four. And so that's why I wanted to kind of bring that back around and encourage you to not, don't, don't look at your eight week results, right? And feel like you did it in, in a week, in a day. Don't do that highlight where you are currently and go through the process now and don't give up, man, because like Beckett to Beckett, that that bridge was done like that.
Becky said, bring out the easy button. Like, you know, that was easy to Brad. It was a pain.
My dad always say, man, measure twice, cut once.
[00:14:54] Speaker B: So, you know, I'm, I'm a measure once, I'm a measure once, throw a board out, measure twice, cut, and then,
[00:15:01] Speaker A: and yeah, but no, that's how that's connected, man. For sure.
[00:15:06] Speaker B: Yeah. Well, this thing that you're talking about, it's called the novelty effect. And it's your brain paying attention to those new experiences or those highlighted experiences. And kids just, plain and simple, have a lot more novelty experiences in that shorter span of time. Like, my son's five and a half. He's growing up on six years old in less than a month, which is also wild to me.
[00:15:29] Speaker A: There you go again.
[00:15:32] Speaker B: I know, man. Like, holy cow, six. Where's six years gone? I mean, you, I, I just, I, you know, it's crazy to put things into perspective.
So my babysitter of our kids, she, she's the greatest babysitter in the world, but I've known her for like, it's, it's got to be, what, 12 years or something like that. And I, I see her now as an adult, but I knew her as a nine year old and like, I don't remember when she was nine. Like, I just remember her as the babysitter. Like, I don't, I, I never. It's just kind of weird to put it into that perspective. Like, I've known your kids since they were little ones and, and how, how old is your, your younger daughter now?
[00:16:13] Speaker A: My baby girl is going to the fourth grade. My next daughter is going to be a seventh grader.
My son is, is 19.
My oldest is 26. Like, yeah, yeah.
[00:16:30] Speaker B: When you take those steps back, back and like, look inside the box and, and just like, and put it into perspective that way, it's just kind of mind blowing. And, and you had mentioned something, man, highlight where you are today because this season is like, really important and you may not be where you want. Like, I, I'm a firm believer that you never really, truly where you want. It's like, oh man, I'm too thin. A little bit. A little too big, a little too thin. I could cut up here, I could chisel there. I, I'm a firm believer that, you know, content but never satisfied kind of mindset, right? Like, content but never satisfied. Like, always in a pursuit of something better. Always in pursuit of something bigger. Like, I'm comfortable, right? I am, I am comfortable where I'm at I'm thin to some places, I'm a little fluffy other places. But there's been times in my life where like, I was chiseled out of a stone and I was like, man, I'm skinny.
And I just think it's like that never ending battle. So really find gratitude and be thankful for where you are today. Like, it's a culmination of all the decisions and actions that you've taken. And then, and then put yourself, you know, five, ten years down the road. I always use the three, six, nine rule. Like, put yourself three, six, nine days, weeks, months, years down the road and look back at yourself, do that third point of, third person point of view. Look back at yourself. Are you making decisions today that would make that person of the future proud? Are you taking action today that would make that future person, that future version proud?
[00:18:01] Speaker A: Yeah, man. No. 100%, you know, and it's funny, no, I have yet to meet somebody that's like, you know what? I'm good. I'm. I'm right there.
Like, I, you know bodybuilders, bro. Like, guys that stand on stage, like, they still look like.
And I don't get it. I'm not even.
Like, I only understand how they judge, though. Like Mr. Olympia. Like, they all look the same. Like, they all look amazing. Like, what are we looking for?
[00:18:27] Speaker B: I don't know what they do, you know what I'm saying?
[00:18:29] Speaker A: Like, and, but they're, they're. Everybody gets critiques, you know?
You know, and I, you know, thinking about even Eric on our team. Like, you know, I, if I had Eric's size and shape, man, I think I would be happy. But he's, he's never satisfied. He's. He's not. Even when he's in peak, even when he's, you know, just got on stage, he's like, man, I was flat. You know, this, like, what, bro? Let me buy that for like two weeks, you know, I'll bring it back, you know, especially his legs, man. You know? Yeah, Paul's in advance, but the man legs are massive.
Like, I've never been a leg guy. Like, you know that dude legs is crazy.
[00:19:09] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:19:09] Speaker A: You know, I mean, and even, I mean, I, it's everybody. Even Jeff. Jeff, when he, when he trims down, he feel like he's skinny. I was like, bro, you're wearing an xl. Your shoulders.
[00:19:20] Speaker B: We just talked about that two weeks ago, last week.
[00:19:22] Speaker A: Yeah, yeah, yeah. He, he, like, I feel like I'm too skinny. Like, what, bro? You this wide. Like, how's that skinny. Like, I don't get it, but every is. Is perspective, man. And you're always chasing.
And. And honestly, I.
I think the only time it becomes unhealthy is when it affects your mood and your emotion and that we talked about emotions and. But when. If it's a, you know, challenge thing or you look at it as a striving towards something, I think that if you. If you approach it that way, it kind of changed the face. Because even for me, like, I have a goal that I have for 2026, you know, post surgery, I have a goal that I. That I want to achieve, you know, the rest of this year. When it comes to my physique, I'm not competing. So I have a personal goal that I'm trying to. Trying to achieve. And I'll tell y', all, like, I wanna. I wanna trim down, but I don't want to lose muscle in the process. And so the goal is to hit 2027 at. Right around 195, 200, but, you know, just. It's the right size. And then when I hit 2027, then start prep for a show at the end of 2027, that's kind of my personal goal. But to get there, like this morning, you know, 205, you know, went to the beach last weekend for my anniversary, ate good. I came back money, like, 210. I was like.
But luckily it didn't, you know, like, it didn't mess with my psyche because I understand this water retention. I understand it's glycogen. I understand it's sodium. I understand it's things that your body does. Inflammation whenever you eat a certain way. It's not fat. I'm not. Like, it didn't mess with my psyche just because I gained a little weight over the weekend, get my water back right, get on a meal, Boom. Ain't no. Like, you can't humanly lose five pounds in three days. Like, it was just all those things that was going on. But I said all that to say, you know, no matter what, you. You want to set a goal, and then you want to always be striving for it because, you know, you never really hit it perfectly.
[00:21:31] Speaker B: Right. Yeah, I. I love this topic. And honestly, we'll probably do two parts to this, but I remember reading an article on Zac Efron, and did you ever watch the new Baywatch with the Rock?
[00:21:42] Speaker A: Yes.
[00:21:43] Speaker B: I mean, he was.
I mean, he was chiseled out of a stone, but. But he also had mentioned that, like, he was the least happy that he's ever been in his entire life through that process because of how restrictive his diet was, how intense the dehydration was, and how unsustainable that lifestyle was. And, you know, from the outside looking in, once again, sometimes what looks healthy is the absolute opposite of what healthy is like, because I look at like somebody like Ronnie Coleman in the, in the 90s, like, holy cow, that's like health. But you, you don't know, like the, the like again, the restrictive diet, the dehydration, some of the things that they're taking.
And you know, social media glorifies, glorifies that. That image. And Zach Efron, like, publicly stated that he will never do that again. And sometimes when. Look at this shirt, it says, I am strong. And. And you have one at the studio next time you go.
But strength is not always something that's visible. Strength is not something that's always measured on a scale. Strength is here. Strength is here. Strength is here. Like, you know, if you say you are strong, that's not something necessarily that you can see. And we've talked about the unseen growth and the unseen development, and Zac Efron said it best, like, I want to be mentally strong. I don't care to be physically strong. And as long as I'm physically healthy. And sometimes that, that, that health, it. It's kind of skewed with, with the, with physique and body image.
[00:23:18] Speaker A: Oh, for sure, man. We can keep going on this.
We can keep going on this, man. Good grief. But I, I will say this before we start to wrap it up. I know our listeners don't mind us going over just a little bit, but, you know, the, like you mentioned about the, Those bodybuilders and, you know, I learned this. And even in the natural realm, those guys on stage, they are not happy.
They are not. They are not happy and smart. We smiling because we're hurting. We're smiling because we're hungry. We're smiling because we're thirsty. We're smiling.
[00:23:51] Speaker B: You're almost there. You're almost to the finish line.
[00:23:54] Speaker A: Yeah, yeah, it is. It like you said, aesthetically, it looks amazing. But, you know, to maintain, like you, it is almost impossible to maintain those single digit, you know, body fat percentage.
And a lot of the people, people aspire to on Instagram, they only show their good days. They never show their off days and never show their bloated days.
And it. And I'm glad that Zach, you know, made that public, man, because, you know, he. He looks. Stays ready in that movie, like, he had the striations and the, the obliques. He was, he was ripped up.
[00:24:31] Speaker B: But.
[00:24:32] Speaker A: And that, that was great for the, for that moment, but it's not, it's not lifestyle, man. So I just want to make sure that I, I say that as we get ready to wrap it up.
[00:24:41] Speaker B: No, I think that's a perfect wrap up.
I think sometimes strength just looks different. And I think everybody has to, you know, just reassess what it means to be strong or what it feels like to be strong and just make sure you're taking care of yourself mentally. And I know, as always, we were all over the map, but I think the messaging was all on point today. And I hope somebo take something from this. And. And let's do a giveaway today. D. I'll get some sunglasses out. All you got to do is share this podcast on your Facebook and tag Dwayne. Tag myself. And let's use a hashtag.
