What if the one thing standing between you and your potential is the truth you refuse to hear?

In this episode of The BAD Podcast, Brad and Dawain get real about self-awareness, accountability, and why constructive criticism can be one of the greatest tools for personal growth.

From marriage and relationships to fitness goals and healthy habits, they share personal experiences about getting defensive, recognizing blind spots, and learning to embrace uncomfortable feedback.

Plus, Dawain shares his plans to return to the original E2M eight-week meal plan with his wife, sparking a conversation about discipline, nutrition, and prioritizing long-term health.

[00:00:00] Speaker A: What up, what up? What up? Welcome back to the Bad podcast, Brad and Dwayne. Another episode in here, man. My brother, Brad, Bradley. What we talking about today, my friend? [00:00:10] Speaker B: Self awareness is being able to hear the truth or see the truth about yourself without immediately going on the defense. [00:00:19] Speaker A: That's gonna be tough for some folks, including me. [00:00:25] Speaker C: Are you ready? Are you ready? [00:00:42] Speaker A: What it looked like, would it be like, what it do? Back in here, another episode of the Bad podcast, Brad and Dwayne and man, super excited to be in here with my brother again. Great topic, great episode ahead for you guys. And man, listen, Brad, we've been, we've been dropping some smokers here lately, bro. There's been some really good episodes dropping the last couple of weeks. [00:01:04] Speaker B: Yeah, I'd like to, I'd like to agree. You cut out there for a second. I didn't know if you're still talking this. I gotta, I got a brand new Internet system down here and I, I continue to glitch and it's probably, you know, you keep telling me to eliminate or limit my tabs. Maybe that's why. Maybe, maybe. Yeah, you know, I, I, I've gotten and received a lot of feedback the last couple of weeks, you know, just hitting really sensitive, good topics, you know, in general. And just, you know, my, my daily goal, man, is to motivate one person a day. Like that's all I, you know, aspire to be is, is a motivator for one person a day. And if we can do that and exceed that, that's why we created this pod, Duane. I mean that's, you know, we want to motivate people, we want to encourage people to, you know, be in the pursuit of something more. And you know, a lot of that self starts with that self awareness. The topic that we're going to talk about today and we, that's let's kick this sucker off. So, you know, you have an accountability partner, you have an accountability group. I have my wife. And you know, we have these people in our lives that call us out and you know, a lot of times we don't want to be called out. It hurts our feelings. You know, we get too far into our emotions, all those things. And instead of allowing that to be fuel for the fire or allowing that to be some kind of contribution to expanding our minds, expanding our journey, we go on the defense and we say, well, you know, I know I should be doing this, but, and you know, I can look at somebody and you can look at somebody being in the personal training field and Say, hey, I, I know you haven't been lifting weights, or I know you haven't been hydrating or I know you haven't been, you know, watching what you eat. And the natural tendency as human beings is to go on the defense and get really combative. Like, hey, hey, don't be telling me that, but it's only because we want the best for you, right? Like I've been in the coaching scene for 15 years, you know, it was always the best player that I would go after. Like, hey, you haven't been, you know, you know, your cuts in, in that 90°, that hasn't been, you know, up to snuff. I'm not going to go to the, the fourth string kicker and be, hey, you know, you haven't been working on that, that, that, that, you know, that flexibility, you know, I, I ain't gonna do it. But you know, if it's somebody that you see value in or somebody that you see some, you know, real, real talent in, you're gonna go after them and say, hey, you haven't been holding yourself accountable, but it takes some self awareness not to go into that competitive state and be on the defense. [00:03:34] Speaker A: No. 100, man, even, even the good book mentioned, man, you know, those you love, you chastise, man, those people you really care about, you're going to, you know, you're going to point out stuff and you know, if people point something out on you that, that's not, it's not criticism, man, is that they want to make you better. But I will say you have to, you always have to know the source because everybody. Yeah, so if it's coming from a loved one, a wife, somebody you trust, you know, that, that they, somebody you know has your best interests in, in, in mind, man, those are the ones that you listen to and the ones that, that don't fit that category, those are the ones you ignore. But there may be some truth in that though, Brad. There may be some truth in the haters, man. You know, everybody talk about haters and people hating on the sideline. You know, you want to, you don't want them to affect you to the point where, you know, you're discouraged, but you may want to listen like, you know what, maybe I could do this better, maybe I could, you know, be better in this area. So, you know, I, I think this is a excellent topic because it's not. The biggest part of this is how you react. That's the biggest part. No matter. And that, and I guess that goes for whoever it comes from Brad, like it comes from anybody. Your reaction is what makes the difference when it comes to that and being self aware enough to know, hey, I'm not perfect, I don't have it all together. I welcome feedback. You know, that became popular probably mid 2000s. Everybody was like, I want feedback, give me feedback. You know, and it was something to say and then when you did it, it was like, you know, it was received kind of funny, man. But we have to, if we want to get better, we have to listen to feedback. We have to be willing to, you know, to take feedback, receive it and, and be willing to, you know, implement it, man, where necessary. [00:05:27] Speaker B: Yeah, yeah, and, and you're spot on with where, what the source is and where that information is coming from. But I think regardless of where that, what that source is or where it's coming from, it's, it's good to have an open mind, right? Like a lot of us are closed minded. Like the best color in the whole world is purple. Well, I think it's green. Well, have an open mind and just listen to why they're, you know, why their mind is on purple or you know, whatever, whatever the topic is, have an open mind and then, you know, have the self awareness to look into that thing, discuss that thing, learn about that thing and, and come up with your own judgment, come up with your own assessment and then like you said, react. Like you can react to any word, you can react to anything going on in the world, you can react to anybody that's in your circle of influence and you know, react in a good way or a bad way. But I think this is a, a perfect time to just, you know, let this podcast be your wake up call to go throughout your life with an open mind. If you hear something that you don't necessarily agree with today, take a step back and instead of closing that thing off and closing the door on that, that potential opportunity or that potential conversation or discussion, have an open mind, have the self awareness to take a step back and golly, maybe purple is the best color in the world and I've never seen it that way. Maybe, you know, the fasting is the best thing in the world or maybe lifting weights is the best thing in the world. And just because you've never had an open mind or the self awareness to recognize that in the moment or maybe throughout your entire life doesn't mean there's not some truth to it. And I think it, it all comes down. It's obviously self awareness, but I think it's a lot of ownership Right. Some accountability. And a lot of us are afraid to take ownership because we have to start making decisions that we've never made. We have to start going places that we've never been. We start doing things that we've never done. And you know, coming with that, there's a lot of discomfort, a lot of painful decisions, a lot of painful actions and a lot of uncertainty. Right. You enter dark rooms and you don't know where to look, but to turn the light on, you have to have the self awareness to take a look around with an open mind and say, well, there's got to be a switch in here somewhere. And to find that switch, you got to go into that and go into exploration mode. A lot of us are afraid to go there. But I think the self awareness piece is the biggest contributing factor to expanding our minds, expanding our lives. [00:07:54] Speaker A: No 100%. And that, you know, that fear of, you know, something new, something different, because we're, we don't, we don't like change, man. We like comfort. We like, we like what we like. You know, we want our newspaper on this side of the table. We want my coffee. You know, we like our routines and being open to looking at it from a different lens. You know, feel, knowing that you don't have all the answers. You know, that's one thing I, I always have to tip my hat off to, to the boss man, Jeff, man, he, he's always open to listen. You know, sometimes, you know, his mind is made up, but he will listen, he will listen and you know, kind of look at from that perspective and that's, that, that's just a sign of good leadership, man. And I think that everybody, no matter what your, your journey is or, you know, your stance is in society, you, you, you, you gain more value when you're willing to open up, when you're willing to listen. You're not dogmatic in your thought. Whether it's fitness, whether it's your career, just kind of taking, taking the feedback, you know, taking the, whatever they got to say, taking it in, examining it, you know, seeing what you can pull out of it. You know, one of those saying where they say, eat the meat, spit out the bones, you know, some stuff you keep, some stuff you don't. But you know, just be, be willing. Don't, don't be closed off. Don't, you know, don't try to close yourself off because that's going to hinder your, your progress and your growth and, and people gonna, you know, it's going to reflect that and then because another thing, you know, when someone gives you that criticism, you know, or that. That advice or whatever, and this is where I need to work, you know, when we talked about this, your response, you know, because it's coming out of love, you know, because, you know, like you mentioned, Adrian used to call out when you didn't reach, like, oh, you ain't read in a while. You know, all that stuff. You know, immediately you want to, like what you mean, you know, you want to tense up, you want to. You want to growl a little bit, you know, even same with me, my wife bring up stuff. And your. Your initial response is, you know, defense. Like, put up a shield. Like, what do you mean? But you have to push past that and understand that, you know, they're saying it for a reason. They're saying it for your benefit. And, you know, you. You can. You. You don't know. You don't know your own blind spots. That's why they call blind spots, and that's why you need people to support those things out. [00:10:17] Speaker B: Yeah, no, I think that's great. I think the name of this podcast has to be Spit out the Bones. I never heard that before. I think that's gotta be the name of the podcast. [00:10:28] Speaker A: I'll put that in chat. [00:10:31] Speaker B: Spit out the Bones, the name of the podcast for sure. And then it's, you know, it. You gotta share the. You gotta share the name, folks. But, man, spot on. With everything that you had just said with Blind spots and, you know, everything that is presented to you, everything that is discussed with you, take it for. Take it with a grain of salt, right? Is the old expression, take it with a grain of salt. Like, hear what is being presented. Like my wife telling me that. That I haven't been reading. I'm like, golly, like, that. That stung. But she. There was some layers to that. She was right. Like, she was spot on and accurate. And you're not always going to like what you hear. You're not always going to like what you see, but sometimes your potential is literally behind what you are unwilling to hear and unwilling to see. And it's. It's scary because, you know, when my wife tells me you haven't been reading, that's literally the thing that's going to take me to the next level, but in my potential is hiding behind that. I didn't want to hear that. I didn't want to see that. I didn't want to have to start reading again because reading for me is uncomfortable. It challenges me. Right? And if you want to get Back on the physique, on the physique stage, like, you're going to have to start doing things that you're really uncomfortable with it that challenge you. And you're going to have people in your circle of influence like, hey, Dwayne, you got to. You got to cut out those Reese's. And it hurts to hear that. Like, nobody wants to hear that. But again, your potential, like, okay, so prime example, this is. This is real life. And. And you know, just recent. It happened to me. So I went for a run outdoors the other day. I went for a six miler. And. And I will tell you what, the tready boy, don't touch the asphalt, okay? And as I was out there, a buddy must have passed me by. He goes, those hills look a little more challenging than. Or those hills must be more challenging than they look or something along those lines. I'm like, oh, man. Because I was probably walking or like really sluggish pace, but I've been working on my treadmill. I just haven't been hitting the asphalt. And that was an eye opener for me. And you know that call out from that buddy that just happened to pass me on the road saying, hey, you look like you're in struggle mode. I wanted to text him back on the defense, like, listen here, buddy. Like, I've been grinding like. But instead I was like, okay, let's have an open mind here. He's spot. And it sucked. It stunk to hear that. But it was precisely what I needed to hear because I do have to get out on the asshole. I do need to start running. And this was three days ago that I went for the run and my body is still, like, kind of in shock. So I got to start, you know, embracing. Embracing that, you know, that feedback. And we all have to embrace that feedback. I know I got to cut out the Reese's. I know I got to drink more water. I know I gotta get more sleep. I. We all know deep down inside, like to the core, we know what we need to do now. We just have to have the open mind to do it, to reach our full potential. [00:13:28] Speaker A: Nah. 100. 100, man. Yeah. Sometimes it'd be those buddies riding by, boy, at the worst moments, you should have seen me at the bottom of the hill, bro. Why are you coming? By now, [00:13:41] Speaker B: I. I wish I would have known I would give him the peace sign, but I would have let the pointer finger down [00:13:50] Speaker A: the broken peace sign. Yes, sir. [00:13:52] Speaker B: The broken piece. [00:13:54] Speaker A: I love it. No, that. Yeah, no, that's. That's good. Man, that, you know, like you said, that's real time, you know, and this you. You talked about for me getting back on the stage, and I, in my mind think I might do it next year. Not 100. Sure. But in the meantime, I'm actually about to work with my wife, man. She wants to. She want to do the OG, the OG E2M meal plan. So [00:14:22] Speaker B: let's get [00:14:23] Speaker A: it November [00:14:24] Speaker B: 1st. [00:14:25] Speaker A: If y' all down with us, we doing it November 1st, man. And so. And I'm gonna be. Because she loved little gummy snacks. So I'm like, all right, I'm. It's gonna be. I'm gonna see how she react. Hey, that's not on the list. Remember that, Brad? We bringing back all the lingo. It's not on the [00:14:42] Speaker B: list. I'm on the end. I'm in. [00:14:44] Speaker A: Yeah, we going, man, we going. I. She wants to do that, and so I'm gonna support her and I'm. I'm gonna do it with her. And yeah, we. We gonna. We're gonna hit on the. Hit on the old school list, man. But during that time, it's not gonna be easy. It's not gonna be easy to go back to that mindset, you know, especially for me, Brad, because, like, I know different ways to, you know, lose weight and get shredded. I know, you know, I know my, my parameters down to the grams and stuff, but I'm gonna block all that out and I' ma [00:15:19] Speaker B: just. [00:15:20] Speaker A: I'm gonna act like I'm brand new. So that's gonna be interesting. We're gonna see how that goes as far as her and me taking constructive criticism, doing that. [00:15:31] Speaker B: And, and you guys, you guys will be your biggest supporters, and it's important to lean on each other. And I. Dude, I think this is great. And I hope you, you know, post about this publicly to maybe, you know, light some fires under other people. And the reason that I love this, Duane, is because, you know, as a fitness person, I'm not necessarily on the fitness piece. I'm on the wellness piece. I'm on the health piece. Like, that's what I've always been on. I'm not chasing six pack abs. I'm chasing a healthy ticker. I'm chasing a healthy mind. I'm chasing good cholesterol, all those things. And for me, I think that's the biggest thing that the old school plan presents is overall health. You're going to see your labs improve. You're going to see there are different ways to approach weight loss 100% and we've seen a million different ways, 10,000 ways to skin a cat. We know this. But the E2M OG plan wasn't just weight loss. It was lower cholesterol levels, it was better blood pressure readings, it was better, you know, cognitive results. Everything that plays into the OG nutrition plan is what I'm on. And as much as I'd like to see everybody here on a physique stage someday, that's, that's not important to me. My, my, my role as a personal trainer to get somebody healthy and that's, that's what I'm on. I don't care what I look like in the mirror as long as I am living a well life and a well balanced life and a healthy life. That's what I'm on. And I hope you, like I said, I hope you publicly announce that because I will jump on board with that. All one hundy in on that. I will get back to the fasting. I will get back on asparagus week and spinach week and, and ACV week. I'm in, baby. So you let me know. I'm in. I will definitely promote with you guys. One Hyundai in on the OG plan. [00:17:18] Speaker A: I like it. I like it. Wait, y' all getting it first, man? Well, I guess when this drop we, we're starting on Sunday. But by the time you hit it, I'll probably make a post. But I'll probably make, I've been debating on making a post about it, you know, kind of announcing it. So I'll probably make a post and so you'll already know by the time this drops and if you're just catching on, you can jump in. But yeah, that's the game plan, man. But no, Brad, this has been, I think this is good, man. Another banger, you know, just hit hitting those topics that need to be hit, man, that a lot of times get overlooked, especially when it comes to, you know, fitness and motivation, encouragement. You know, we, we don't take time to reflect on, you know, self awareness where we are currently and able to, to make adjustments for there, man. So what you got to say in closing, man? [00:18:05] Speaker B: Hey, your potential is hiding behind something you're running from. So stop running from it. Step up to it, embrace it. Find your potential. [00:18:14] Speaker A: I love. Good stuff.
