[00:00:01] Speaker A: Go.
We got some stuff to talk about, baby. Brad is laughing. Welcome back to the Bad Podcast, man.
We gonna talk about some soccer stuff. We're gonna bring in some other stuff. We're trying to, you know, stay in. I don't know much about soccer, my kids play soccer. But anyway, nevertheless, we'll get there when we get there. But I just had to throw that out there to make Brad laugh. Brad, what's going on, brother?
Hey, man, we're gonna talk about gray
[00:00:24] Speaker B: hairs, we're going to talk about broken down barns and we're going to talk about a little bit of soccer. Although you and I don't know much about soccer, this is going to relate to fitness, life development, everything.
[00:00:34] Speaker A: Let's get it.
[00:00:39] Speaker B: Are you ready? Are you ready?
[00:00:55] Speaker A: What it looked like, would it be like what it do back in here? Another episode of the Bad podcast, which stands for Brad and Dwayne. We're in here another week, Brad. We got a little momentum going. People are noticing that we got some, some, some consistency going again.
Super excited, man. What's going on with you?
[00:01:17] Speaker B: Well, let's talk a little life, Dwayne.
So a couple of days ago I, I haven't shaved in a few days and I don't grow facial hair very quick, but I do have a couple of white stragglers coming through and my wife called me out and was like, hey, you got quite a few gray hairs. And you know, it's just kind of funny this, this past week when this airs. This past week was an emotional week for me personally.
My first kindergarten class that I had 13 years ago, they walked the stage as graduates this past week. My first born walk the stage as a kindergarten graduate this past week.
I got the white hair boys coming out now. And it's just, you know, it's, it's one of those things where it doesn't matter what you do in life, time will pass and yeah, just got some gray hairs coming in and, you know, it's one of those things, man. My wife and I were just talking about it. It seems like yesterday her and I were walking the stage and it's been 20 plus years. It's, it's just wild how time flies, man.
[00:02:25] Speaker A: Yeah, yeah, that, that actually goes in line with.
I jumped on Instagram stories yesterday talking about my gray hair adventure. I did a video for my, from my other page, my coach Dwayne page, and I was like, man, gray is getting more grayer. And then I go to my barber and I was like, man, I noticed to get more gray he offered now he was like, hey, I could die for you. I was like, nah, I'm good, I'm good, I'm good. Nah, man. Yeah, no, I, I do.
You know, my, my dad, you know, you guys know my dad has a lot of brothers and one, one year they all grew their beards out. And man, when I tell you, like, they look like Moses and Abraham and yeah, they had, their beers were white, man, white as snow. And it was huge. It was the cold, coolest thing ever. So, so that's, that's goals for me one day, you know, when I get a little bit older to get that, that full, you know, white, white, like snow beard. You know, get that, get my Abraham on. So,
[00:03:30] Speaker B: you know, it, It's. We, we're a fitness podcast. We're a self development podcast. And this all ties in really well because I mentioned this story about the broken down barn before, and my wife put it into really good perspective that relates to what we talk about.
My son and I, we go to the same barber. Speaking of barbers, we go to the same barber every month or so. And every time we pass this broken down bar, my son asks what happened to that barn? And what happens over time is, you know, sometimes neglect plays into a broken down barn, or sometimes neglected contributes to our regression in life. But also in the same breath, you have to think that, you know, sometimes breaking down, sometimes slowing down is a natural process in life. And although you may be taking absolute perfect care of your body, sometimes gray hairs are going to occur, sometimes your, your barn is, you know, it may not be neglect, it may just be the aging process, right? And you reach a certain point and you look in the mirror and there's so much transformation and so much evolution and change that occur that you may not even recognize yourself. And I think that's kind of where I want to go with the podcast today is, you know, when you see transformation or you see certain goals, milestones that other people are achieving, don't forget about the, the practice that they put in place. Don't forget about the sacrifices that they forget about all the hours spent in those, those specific self development buckets. And we're going to talk a little soccer today. This, this past week, two weeks ago now, Lionel Messi had a hat trick, right?
Go. And, yeah, you go, man. He had a hat trick. And a lot of people see the three goals that go into the net, right?
But they miss everything that happened before those three goals. They missed the late nights that he put in. They. They missed the early Mornings that he put in.
This is fitness in a nutshell, right? People see results, not the preparation.
[00:05:46] Speaker A: No 100, bro. And you know, again, we're not soccer guys. So I immediately. Sorry, sorry, Brad, to take this away from Messi, but I immediately went to Kobe.
[00:05:57] Speaker B: Yeah, yeah, yep.
[00:05:59] Speaker A: Beeline to Kobe because, you know, I forgot it was, it was one of the many buzzer beaters and you know, they asked him after, there's like, you know, when you get. Got the ball, what was going through your mind? He was like, this is what I do every day. I literally put myself in this situation every single day. So all I was thinking was, hey, it's just another day. I was like, yep, you're the Mamba. But it's true, because it, that. But. And what it talked about was before you saw the game winner on TV in front of everybody, he's the first one in the gym, he's the last one out the gym. He's in there every day. I mean, it was, it was known, man, and, and even, even Jalen Brinson, you know, to bring it back, back current. Same thing. Like, you know, he, he took over every fourth quarter of the finals. Like, and that's another thing they asked and, and tapes are coming up in him and his dad, like, so, so many years time spent before that, that grand moment. And I think with fitness, because for whatever reason, you know, I don't know who to blame for it, but we think that it has to be a. Supposed to be a fast, like, reward.
It's not. It is. It takes time. It takes the grind. It takes what nobody sees before you get that compliment, oh, you look nice, or before you get that, you know, you step on the stage or before you, you know, do something spectacular, man. It's a lot behind the scenes, man. And, and like you mentioned with Messi, man, like, I'm sure he, he kicked or shot. I don't know how you say it in soccer, but I'm sure, I'm sure he did it a million times, you know, before, you know that, that big moment.
[00:07:49] Speaker B: Yeah, that's the frustrating thing in fitness is because everybody wants to celebrate the hat tricks. Everybody wants to celebrate when you get on stage. Everybody wants to celebrate when you write a book or cross a finish line.
But it's those 10,000 days that lead up to that finish line. It's the 10,000 days that lead up to that accomplishment. And like, that's, that's the boring behind the door, behind the scenes work that nobody sees. And, and you know, you're talking about those, those quick results, man. Everybody wants these like massive breakthroughs overnight. And that's not the rewarding part in fitness. The rewarding part in fitness is, is the grind, man. It's the sweat, it's the soreness, it's the, you know, the temporary discomfort when you get under the bar or get on the treadmill. You know, it's those hundreds of reps that you put in and then you walk out into, you know, say your, your class reunion. I got my 20 year in two weeks.
[00:08:41] Speaker A: Nice.
[00:08:42] Speaker B: You go to this class reunion and everybody's going to be unrecognizable.
But what kind of unrecognizable do you want to be? Do you want to take some initiative with your life and be the good kind of unrecognizable or do you want to go to that class reunion and be the, be the fellow or the lady that was like, hey man, I, I had no, no intention in life and I just kind of existed and I let myself go. And as frustrating as that is to hear for somebody, I think sometimes we just need a wake up call to put in, you know, the work and, and, and prepare yourself for these moments because everybody right now, I, I bet is getting ready for this class reunion. I gotta look my mighty finest for this class reunion. Well, where for me, I've already put in the 10, 000 days. I, I, I ain't doing anything different today than I was 10, 000 days ago.
[00:09:31] Speaker A: Right.
[00:09:32] Speaker B: I'm not doing anything different today as far as my workout or my, my, my eating habits, but there scrambling around right now, probably in a little bit of panic because they are going to be unrecognizable and it's probably not because or not the unrecognizable that they want to be.
So build it into your life, make this a part of like everyday life. Right? And I think that's the relatability between the soccer game and, and you being on a stage, me writing books and doing, you know, the long distance endurance thing and, and fitness and the people that are listening to this podcast.
[00:10:09] Speaker A: Yeah, no 100. So I think the goal at a class reunion is actually to be recognizable.
[00:10:15] Speaker B: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
[00:10:21] Speaker A: Think about that man. You, you have your 20 in, in two in a couple weeks and I have my 30 in two years. So big difference there.
No, that, that is so true. We did a kind of like a class thing for homecoming this past year and like I said, the, the goal is to be recognizable. There Were some folks. I mean, you know, shout out to y' all if you watch it. I love you. But I was like, we graduated together, like, same year. Like, yeah, you show, like, you know, but. And. And no slack. No. No shade. But it's just the reality of, you know, they. They took a different path.
[00:11:06] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:11:07] Speaker A: And I'm sure. I mean, let's be. Let's be real. Real son. And I put myself out there. If at. So, okay, at my 10th year anniversary, I was good. I was still. I was still. You know what I'm saying? I'm saying. But if we would have had a 15th or.
Yeah, if we would have had a 15. Yeah, I. I might have been unrecognizable in a bad way, you know? And that's just. That's just reality of it. And, you know, that person that. That is faced with that reality that today, you know, this isn't a pity party. Go quit. This is a. Hey, get it together. You know, the person that might not look good at the 20 year, you can be right by the 25 year. You could be right by the 30 year, you know, let it be fuel. Don't let it deflate you. You know, And, Brad, I think that's something that me and you have in common, man. We.
We see challenges different, man. A lot of people see challenges and shortcomings and disappointed as a stop. We see it as a goal, like, okay, you got me this time, but next time, it's not gonna be the case. And I think if you just change your mindset on that, you know, that in itself is gonna.
Because, you know, you can't do nothing about yesterday. You can't. You said What. You said 10,000 days. Those 10,000 days ago. You can't do nothing about those. What you have to focus on is today and the 10,000 in front of you, man.
[00:12:36] Speaker B: For sure. Yeah. And. And folks will look at 10,000 days and think that they have to win every single one of them. You don't have to win 10,000 days, guys. You just have to win four out of seven days. You win the week, right? You win four out of seven days, you win the week. And I think that's something that separates those that are successful and those who quit is. You look at these days and you think you got to win seven. And when you don't win seven, you get frustrated. And when frustration occurs, you know, that mindset. The mindset is everything. Mindset, sure. Literally everything.
And when you can. When you can develop the mindset of, hey, I just Lost all seven. But what am I going to do on the eighth day? Yeah, that's going to define me. I, I don't care about the seven behind me. I need to, I need to be defined by the eighth day. Day.
And those that are successful, those who, you know, grow frustrated, discouraged, and finally throw up the white flag. The thing that distinguishes the two groups is a couple of things. Patience, consistency, showing up when motivation disappears, falling in love, being obsessed with the process. Right? And people are not obsessed with the process. People are obsessed with the product. People are obsessed with the finish line. People are obsessed with what they see in the mirror or what the scale says about them. Don't worry about the scale. The scale will prove you did all the work. If you're in love with the process, the mirror will show a reflection of all the work you put in. I just saw this the other day. Your, what you do or what you look like in public is a direct reflection of what you do in private, right? So you go to that 20 year reunion, you go to that 25 year reunion, go to that 30 year reunion. What people see at that reunion and is going to be a direct correlation with what you do behind closed doors. So what are you doing behind closed doors? What do you, are you moving your body or are you, are you getting caught with the hand in the cookie jar? You hitting up Netflix and chill? What are you doing in private? Because that is going to show in public.
[00:14:36] Speaker A: No, absolutely, bro, that's, I mean, I, there's nothing I can come back on now that you, you hit that point. I mean, on the money, the, the, that's the, that's kind of the application, man. You know, we talk about the transition and you know what, what makes the difference, the mentality as the application, doing it, you know, not just talking about it, not just starting over, but actually chasing, you know, those things, man. So. Yeah, you got that one, Brad.
[00:15:09] Speaker B: Hey man, you focus on the fundamentals. You, you master the basics. What are the fundamentals here? Move your body, right? You don't need to go bench press £225. You don't have to go run a marathon. You don't have to, you know, you don't have to cut calories.
Focus on the fundamentals, man. Eat primarily whole foods, walk for 20 minutes a day. Do a little bit of strength training three to three to four days a week. Do a little bit of mobility work, do some stretching, right?
Try to drink half of your body weight in ounces of water. I, I just had a kid the other day he was like, I only drink Gatorade because Gatorade's healthy. Well, Gatorade is really good at marketing their product, right? They have Michael Jordan drinking Gatorade. They got Derek Jeter. Now I'm dating myself because I don't know anybody right now that's in sports that's drinking Gatorade. But I'm sure they all are.
[00:16:02] Speaker A: Cooper flag. Cooper flag.
[00:16:04] Speaker B: Boom. There you go. Drinking Gatorade, right? We see. Yeah, I don't know anybody right now. I don't know.
[00:16:11] Speaker A: Go ahead. Go, go.
[00:16:12] Speaker B: But we see that and we think, well, these guys are athletes, right? So if I want to look like that, I got to drink this stuff. When in reality, your body, it does need the things that come with Gatorade, all right? Like potassium, like electrolytes and all that.
But if you're not moving your body, if you're not perspirating, your body don't need no Gatorade. It don't need no electrolyte. It needs water. You need to repl. Replenish the fluids in your body. And there are a lot of kids out there. And, you know, I'm a. I'm a former physical education teacher, so I know these kids think that Gatorade is healthy. It can be, but if you're working extremely hard. Michael Jordan, Derek Jeter, Serena Williams, like, these folks are grinding for thousands of hours, right? And that's why they're replenishing their, Their, Their. Their minerals and vitamins through Gatorade. It's water.
Water. Fundamentals, master basics, small improvements, compound.
[00:17:10] Speaker A: You gotta have something to replenish.
Yeah, that's good, though, because, you know, that's what they talk about. Replenish the minerals and vitamins or the electrolytes. You know, it's not in water. And kids are sitting around the house drinking Gatorade, not even sweating.
No, Just over.
Overdosing on. On electrolytes.
[00:17:32] Speaker B: Well, and it's frustrating because it's. It's really just a lack of information. It's a lack of education.
And, you know, the school that I taught out, taught at Shout out to my Sherman Wildcats, there was a lot of that. You know, kids would, you know, eat diet this and drink diet that and low fat this and, you know, low carb that, high protein this and that. And again, like, if you're not moving your body, a high protein meal is going to be one of the worst things for you, right? If you're eating a hungry man, high protein meal, meal, three days, three times a day for four, five, six days a week. And you're not exercising, you're not moving your body. Like weight gain is going to occur. I promise you, even if you eat a. Even if you eat a couple of good meals, but you're still not moving your body, your. Your weight's going to fluctuate and it's probably going to have a tendency to. To. To elevate. Sure.
[00:18:21] Speaker A: For sure. 100. 100.
[00:18:24] Speaker B: We're all over the place. I love it.
[00:18:25] Speaker A: We're all over the place, man.
Welcome to the show. We always listen, y'.
[00:18:30] Speaker B: All.
[00:18:30] Speaker A: We really try. We try. We have notes and everything. We was gonna do it different this time, but, you know, it's just the nature of it, man. We just. It's conversational and, you know, we both like. And we're passionate about this and we both, you know, just, we, we love what we do, man. And so we, we take those. Those rabbit. Those rabbit trails every now and again.
[00:18:51] Speaker B: So.
[00:18:52] Speaker A: But to. To your point, the. I'm. I'm real so glad you brought up the, the drinking the Gatorade, you know, and the eating the protein, and if you do that and you don't do nothing with it, like, is. It's just. It's just added calories for no reason. That was, that was good. That was good for sure. I had, I had.
[00:19:11] Speaker B: I had an athlete in high school and he drank optimum whey protein drinks and he didn't exercise and he was wondering why he was getting so overweight. And I'm like, buddy, yeah, you're drinking those. Yeah, they're phenomenal. They taste really good. And, and people that drink them typically are like, jacked. But those people that are drinking them are also finding themselves under a bench bar or. Yeah. With some bicep curl. Like, they're, they're. They're also strength training quite a bit.
[00:19:41] Speaker A: You can't Utilizing it.
[00:19:42] Speaker B: Right. You gotta. Yeah. Utilization here, folks, like, have an expectation that you're going to look a certain way without putting in the work.
So, yeah, take that for what it is.
[00:19:53] Speaker A: I love it. I love it. I only know where we at.
[00:19:58] Speaker B: Well, we can, we can start to land this plane. And, you know, I think the, the big message here would be, you know, show up when, when, when others aren't applauding your efforts.
Progress is oftentimes invisible. Right. I always talk about unseen change, and that's another token that people can take from this. A lot of people will look in the mirror and they're looking for.
For that change. If you're putting in the work.
[00:20:23] Speaker A: The.
[00:20:24] Speaker B: The best change that's going to occur is. Is beneath the skin. It's. It's deeper than surface level. It's a better. It's a better healthy heart. It's.
[00:20:32] Speaker A: Your.
[00:20:32] Speaker B: Your cognitive development is going to be better. Your. Your. Your, you know, your blood flow, your. Your blood pressure, your labs, like, all of that's going to improve. And you'll never see that unless you go to a doctor and they give you a slip. It's like, hey, all your. Your cholesterol levels are great, you know, but all of the best change, all the best transformation in our lives, you will never, ever see, but keep showing up, right? Trust the process. And your big breakthrough is a lot closer than you think.
[00:21:01] Speaker A: Yeah, man.
And I guess I'll say this.
Nobody accidentally does a hat trick.
Boom.
You know what I'm saying? It's not an accident, right? It's not an accident. You don't. That level of. Of greatness doesn't happen by accident.
Whenever you see a before and after, it doesn't happen by accident. Somebody don't accidentally reshape their body. Somebody don't accidentally lose 40, 50 pounds. It does not happen by accident. It happens when you put in the work, man. For sure.
[00:21:38] Speaker B: Yeah. Hey, man, if you're not intentionally and on purpose taking care of your health and your fitness, you may accidentally become extremely unhealthy and extremely overweight. So be on purpose, right? But with intention, with deliberate action.
Come on, now. There is. I love that. Dwayne. There is no accident in a hat trick. I think Close out, baby.
[00:22:02] Speaker A: That's the closer, man. I did it. All right, drop it in the comment section. If you love my clothes out tag somebody. Let everybody know your favorite podcast, the Bad Podcast, which stands for Brad and Duane. Till next time, we out of here.
